Jun. 28–FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. — While Walton County officials ponder safety concerns in light of Saturday’s fatal shark attack near Miramar Beach, local experts say more visitors than ever will hit the beaches this Fourth of July weekend.
Despite ongoing national media coverage about the shark attack that killed 14-year-old Jamie Marie Daigle of Gonzales, La., area resorts are fully booked. That trend should continue for the rest of the summer with more than 1.5 million overnight stays expected, said Kriss Titus, executive director of the Walton County Tourist Development Council.
