Hello Michael,
nice fishing areas are in Levanto and Sestri Levante, which you can easily reach by car, in the area there are also many hotels, there is also the possibility to rent a boat.
A Levanto is an area that is called the galleries, which can be reached on foot, while the boat in Sestri Levante is important to see the most beautiful areas.
The bottom is rock mixed seagrass and units operating range from 0 to 30 meters, even a few meters the surprise is always lurking.

I would not plan a spearfishing holiday in Italy in august, too crowded and too many boats around!

Anyway, you will have the better chances if you go on an island, for sure. Sardinia or Isola d’Elba or Isola del Giglio.

mille grazie to all of you for your help.

I looked at all the places you told me and I think Levanto / Sestri Levante is perfect for me.
Its really beautiful on the pictures and its close to germany so its easy for me to get there.

Is there anything else I should know before I go there?
For example:
Do I need a license for spearfishing / rod&reel fishing and are there any good spearfishing shops?
Submaro, you mentioned there are many hotels in the area, are there a lot of tourists in this area during august?

Hello, I do not need no permit to fish, but when you arrive you better ask for information where possible and where it is not possible to fish in August you will find many tourists throughout Liguria is the month most chaotic, but if you go early in the morning or evening to fish you’ll see that you’ll be fine hello!!
P.S. In Sestri Levante there are also shops equipped for fishing 😉

all right, I guess I’ll just look for a nice place between sestri levante and levanto with rocks but without any swimmers then.
I read on this forum that there is a rule that you have to spearfish 500m away from beaches and 100m away from rocks.
Is this true? even if you dont have a boat?

Yes, it is true, this is our law, even if local rules may change that distance. But Italy is not Germany, we have a lot of absurd rules nobody respect…
As you can imagine in most cases 500m from the beach would be dangerous because of the boat traffic, because the depth of the sea and because of many other reasons you can guess, so as long as people does not do something very stupid, the police may ignore this.

I suggest you to ask to local spearfishers how, where and when it is safe to dive (i.e. it is better if you dive at dawn, before “normal” people arrives ^_^ ).
